CWDS Glossary

The CWDS Glossary includes a List of Acronyms and defined terms captured from various models, reports, and other artifacts pertaining to the Child Welfare System – California Automated Response and Engagement System (CWS-CARES) Project. The Glossary standardizes terms used across the various project disciplines; each term is defined with its meaning specific to the project domain.

Business Impact Analysis (BIA)

The process of determining the criticality of business activities and associated resource requirements to ensure operational resilience and continuity of operations during and after a business disruption.

Business Intelligence (BI)

A set of techniques and tools for the transformation of raw data into meaningful and useful information for the CWS-CARES Project business analysis purposes. The techniques and tools allow for easy interpretation of CWS-CARES Project data for effective reporting, analysis and to make timely decisions based on historical, current and predictive views of business operations.

Business Objects (BO)

A business representation of an organization's data that helps end users access data autonomously using common business terms. Business Objects isolates business users from the technical details of the databases where source data is stored.

Business Objects Universe

A Business Objects Universe is a semantic layer that maps complex data into business areas (e.g., case, referrals) with elements that use descriptive business terms known across the organization.

Business Process Model and Notation (BPMN)

Data modeling applicable to software engineering utilizing the process of creating a data model for an information system by applying formal data modeling techniques and graphical representation for specifying business processes in a business process model.

Business Process Package (BPP)

Each Business Process Package contains high-level workflows and operational scenario narrative descriptions that describe an aspect of California’s current statewide CWS practices.

Business Rules

Rules that govern the flow and function of the Application and enforce customer business policies and procedures navigation through the Application and data access.

Business Rules Extract

The process of extracting essential intellectual business logic in the form of business rules from packaged or legacy software applications and stating them in natural or formal language.

Business Services Office (BSO)

A Branch of OSI that procures and oversees all aspects of OSI’s physical environments. This includes building leasing, maintenance, emergency response to building problems, physical security issues, conference room allocation and configuration, employee furniture and non-IT equipment needs, including building enhancements such as electrical upgrades, HVAC, building reconfiguration, and overseeing the moving of employees. Creates and replaces physical badges for employees and is the authoritative decision-making unit for the multiple OSI building locations.

Buy/Build Approach

The concept of purchasing a pre-built, off-the-shelf solution, which is delivered through the web and custom build of additional functionality in support of specific business requirements not addressed in the pre-built solution.
